Will Zaccone be able to hold on and win the MotoE title?

The Austrian MotoE Grand Prix left some interesting things to analyze ahead of the Grand Finale to be held in Misano, Italy, on September 18 and 19.

Alessandro Zaccone was able to keep the lead, but he is already feeling the pressure of Eric Granado, Jordi Torres and Dominic Aegerter, who are looking to snatch the first place and win the title.

After a very close race in Spielberg, Zaccone finished sixth. Lukas Tulovic took his first win in the electric series and Granado finished second in a remarkable comeback, while Aegerter completed the podium. These results left the standings very close between riders, so the final day will decide everything.

Obstacles for Zaccone

The Italian Pramac Racing rider was looking for a much better result, but the unstable weather changed his plans. The MotoGP race had already ended in the rain, so the track was still wet when the MotoE contest started.

Due to the poor weather, Zaccone and his team had prepared for the rainy scenario, but the track dried out completely during the race. The rider, however, was conservative enough to avoid accidents, complete the track and arrive at the end of the season at home leading the standings.

A win for the pilot would be the second title for an Italian in the class, after Matteo Ferrari’s in 2019, the electric class’ debut year. The task will not be easy, however. Several drivers behind him are ready to spoil the party, beginning with a very strong Granado, who has been able to overcome after a 13th place and retirement that offset the two victories and podium in Austria.

The difference with the leader is only seven points, so Granado is dreaming of winning the Championship, on his third season in the category. He has only one more point of difference compared to the reigning champion, Jordi Torres, who has three podiums, a fifth and a seventh place as his worst results of the season.

Eleven points behind Zacconne is Switzerland’s Aegerter, whose 18th place at Assen weighs heavily on him in the standings, but three podiums earned him a place to be considered a contender at Misano.

Other Riders with Hopes

With 27 points and still mathematically in play is Lukas Tulovic. The German is motivated by his victory in Austria and has nothing to lose on the Italian track.

Matteo Ferrari, on the other hand, currently 32 points behind his countryman in the lead and with several difficult races this year. Such is the case that it is the first electric campaign where we have not yet seen him on the podium. But a combination of results and a perfect performance can make the miracle happen.

Although everything is very uphill, we can include Mattia Casadei in this group, who, 50 points behind the leader, is still fighting until the end. The driver suffered a hard blow when he was unable to take part in the last race after testing positive for COVID-19.

Newcomers Miquel Pons, Yonny Hernandez, Hikari Okubo and Fermin Aldeguer are still included among the possible calculations, despite being under the same conditions as Casadei and Tulovic, where only a miracle would put them at the top.
