As Formula 1 kicks off its 75th anniversary year in 2025, the sport has released an update on its progress toward sustainability and social commitments during the 2024 season.

The update outlines advancements in reducing carbon emissions, promoting diversity, and fostering inclusivity, all part of its 2030 Sustainability Strategy. The full 2024 Impact Report, detailing progress toward the Net Zero by 2030 goal, will be published later this year.

This will cover in detail F1’s progress towards its Net Zero by 2030 goal, including its latest carbon emission reduction figures. In the 2023 Social Impact Report, these were on target at 13% against the minimum 50% reduction required versus the 2018 baseline.

Environmental Achievements

  • Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF): Investments in SAF with partners DHL and Qatar Airways reduced emissions by over 8,000 tCO2e, a 19% reduction compared to traditional aviation fuel.
  • Low-Carbon Energy Systems: Renewable energy solutions, including hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO), biofuels, solar panels, and batteries, were tested in 2023 and deployed at European Grands Prix in 2024, cutting emissions by over 90% in key areas.
  • Race Calendar Optimization: Adjustments to the 2024 schedule, such as moving the Japanese Grand Prix to April and aligning Qatar with Abu Dhabi, reduced unnecessary travel and associated emissions.
  • Sustainable Fuels: F2 and F3 cars ran on 55% advanced sustainable fuel in 2024, with plans to transition to 100% by 2025. Formula 1 will adopt these fuels in 2026 with the introduction of new hybrid engines.
  • Eco-Friendly Tyres: All cars used Pirelli tyres made with FSC-certified sustainable rubber.
  • Promoter Initiatives: 80% of promoters used alternative energy sources, and over 90% offered greener travel options for fans.

Social Initiatives

  • F1 Engineering Scholarships: The program supported underrepresented students, covering tuition and living expenses while providing career opportunities within F1 teams.
  • Learning Sectors Program: Launched in collaboration with the British Council, this global initiative aims to inspire 130,000 students in Brazil, India, South Africa, and the UK to pursue STEM subjects.
  • F1 ACADEMY: The female-only racing series held 14 races alongside F1 events, increasing female participation in karting from 5% in 2023 to 25% in 2024.
  • Community Engagement: All promoters partnered with local organizations to inspire the next generation, while F1 funded UNICEF’s digital learning passport, benefiting over 10 million children globally.

Governance and Collaboration

  • Diversity & Inclusion Charter: F1, the FIA, and all 10 teams committed to improving accessibility in motorsport through a shared set of principles.
  • Sustainability Accreditation: F1 maintained ISO 20121:2012 certification and the FIA’s Three-Star Environmental Accreditation, the highest level of recognition for environmental sustainability.

“Innovation and community drove Formula 1’s work in 2024. We are thrilled to outline our progress and continued efforts in this space, leveraging our global reach and technological leadership”
