McLaren Racing announced this Friday its entry into the new series of electric off-road vehicles, Extreme E, starting next year, in 2022. The Woking firm will thus start in the competition that aims to use racing to promote sustainability and diversity.
“The decision to enter the Extreme E follows a detailed evaluation of the series by McLaren against a set of strategic, economic and operational criteria,” the squad said in a statement issued Friday.
McLaren detailed that from the moment the Extreme E was announced, they have been closely following the progress of the series and were struck by the format of this motorsport platform.
“In particular the ability it gives us to accelerate and boost our own overarching sustainability agenda, which shares the same priorities of decarbonisation, waste reduction, diversity and equality,” said Zak Brown, CEO of McLaren Racing.
The brand was satisfied to be part of a competition with big names in motorsport, specifically Formula 1 and IndyCar; however, he announced that they will not abandon the rest of the categories in which they run.
“We are absolutely thrilled to welcome Zak and the powerhouse McLaren Racing team to Extreme E, and it’s safe to say, we can’t wait to see how the team performs in its first off-road, electric racing debut. Season 2 just got very exciting!” said Extreme E CEO Alejandro Agag.

It should be noted that the nascent category also serves for the automotive industry to develop technology related to electric mobility.
The Extreme E will be back in action on August 28 and 29 with the Arctic X-Prix in Greenland. In the new appointment the competitors will seek to snatch the lead from the Rosberg X Racing team who have won in the first two rounds.
