Manufacturing giant Magna International unveiled details of their ” EtelligentReach EV” powertrain, which will debut on a new vehicle in 2022. The new technology joins a growing list of electrification components being developed and deployed by the company into OEM vehicles to help further accelerate the adoption of electrified cars.

The innovation is a modular approach to electric powertrains and the result provides components to fit all customers, as well as helping to keep costs low regardless the volume.

This connected all-electric system is comprised with dual electric motors, inverters and gearboxes backed by advanced software to maximize both electric vehicle range and driving dynamics.

According to Magna, electric vehicles using the EtelligentReach powertrain can achieve range increases of up to 90 miles (145 km) or 30% compared to certain production cars.

Increased Range

Magna Powertrain President, Tom Rucker, noted that EtelligentReach reduces range anxiety and improves driving dynamics, providing automakers with a complete all-electric powertrain system with AWD that is “exciting and efficient.” “We can create maximum efficiency by precisely orchestrating how each component works together to achieve the best possible performance,” he said.

The car with the new technology will use a functional modular control unit that integrates various powertrain and chassis functions to increase efficiency and limit carbon emissions. Customers will soon be able to select from several distinctive driving modes, taking advantage of additional efficiency gains from the use of silicon carbide in Magna’s patented inverter.
