Preparations for Formula E season 9 are going full steam ahead of the anticipated debut of the Gen3 car, the world’s most powerful electric car, according to series promoters.
The novel single-seater will not come alone in this new stage of the tournament, but will be backed by a robust charging infrastructure supplied by ABB.
The company presented the supply technology that will be used for the season, consolidating its leadership as the official supplier of the competition endorsed by the International Automobile Federation.
In collaboration with engineers from motorsport’s governing body, the FIA and Formula E, ABB developed a compact, reliable and safe solution for charging the new Gen3 cars before race day and between sessions.
The ABB Formula E race charger was designed in a customized and ergonomic way that allows for easy transport and global installation.

According to official Formula E data, each charger can deliver a maximum power of 160kW and is capable of supplying two vehicles with 80kW of capacity simultaneously before the race.
This allows race teams to benefit from a “dual charging” capability of one unit, which significantly reduces the space occupied by the charger and reduces transport emissions, as one unit per car is no longer needed.
Frank Mühlon, CEO of ABB E-mobility, noted his delight at bringing innovative charging solutions to the world’s largest electric mobility stage, the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship.
“This continues our drive to use the series as a test bed for new, more sustainable technologies. Charging the Gen3 cars will provide us with valuable test data on charging in a high-pace competitive environment. The experience and knowledge we gain will be used to continually improve ABB chargers for customer and consumer use,” he explained.
For his part, Jamie Reigle, CEO of Formula E, emphasized that technical progress and sustainable innovation are cornerstones of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship.
“Our partnership is based on a shared commitment to promote electric mobility and we are delighted that ABB will provide advanced charging systems for our race teams in Gen3,” he added.
Reigle assured that ABB’s mobile chargers set the industry standard and will serve as critical infrastructure to achieve the championship. “We look forward to showcasing ABB’s leading charging products under the demanding standards of the competition and demonstrating that high performance and sustainability can coexist without compromise.”
