Mattia Casadei and Dominique Aegerter were the main protagonists of the second round of the MotoE 2022 World Championship, held at Le Mans. Casadei triumphed on Saturday as he dominated the circuit from start to finish.
The race was extremely eventful with crashes for reigning champion Jordi Torres, Xavi Fores and Marc Alcoba. The first of these was taken to the hospital to have his injuries checked.
Amid great pressure from Kevin Zannoni, who was closing dangerously and with eight laps to go, Casadei held firm. Although Dominique Aegerter was also closing in on the frontrunners, the fight for the win was turning into a tussle between the two Italians. In the end, Zannoni fell in his attempt to overtake Casadei, who showed great coolness to withstand the onslaught of his compatriot.
Aegerter benefited from Zannoni’s mistake to take second and Okubo completed the podium of the first MotoE event at Le Mans. Héctor Garzó finished fifth and Miquel Pons sixth.
Sunday Session
In the second round of the French weekend, Aegerter, who had already fought hard on Saturday, was rewarded on Sunday and took the win. The Swiss rider managed the times well to overtake Casadei on the last lap of a race that had been dominated by the Italian.
Unlike the previous day’s start, this time there were no accidents to regret. Casadei started the race very solidly, just as he had done on the first day. Meanwhile, Eric Granado, winner of the double in Jerez, had problems to keep the fourth place at the start, and the ghost of irregularity came back to haunt him.
Casadei knew that with eight laps to go he could repeat the tactic that won him the race on Saturday, but a small blip allowed an incisive Aegerter to take command and cross the finish line first.
With Sunday’s win, the Swiss rider takes the lead with 78 points, eight ahead of Granado, 17 ahead of Casadei and 30 ahead of Ferrari.
