The Candela C-8 Electric Boat Outsells Gasoline-powered Vessels

The impact that electric technology generates in all areas represents a change of vision in the current society, accustomed from its industries to fossil fuels for subsistence.

Boat manufacturers are already experiencing these changes and, for example, the company Candela, a boat builder based in Stockholm, Sweden, is registering a significant increase of C-8 sales, with figures higher than those of gasoline-powered boats.

This is a 28-foot model that has mind-blowing features that make users feel in a truly futuristic environment. Not only electric-powered, it also flies over the water on a pair of hydrofoils.

The boat is powered by a new silent propellant known as C-POD, which was also developed by Candela. It uses a pair of propellers, each driven by an individual motor completely submerged underwater.

The C-POD was developed for the C-8 as part of a new design philosophy that shifts from handmade assembly to mass production. This manufacturing has enabled the Swedish company to offer the vehicle, which is larger and much better equipped, for the same price as the smaller C-7 already in use around the world.

Immediate Success

Candela unveiled the new vessel just six weeks ago and has already sold more than 60 units. The Nordic region leads Europe in boat construction. Top-selling manufacturers produce between 100 and 120 boats of 28-footers each year, placing the company on track to surpass other builders. That feat becomes even more impressive when you consider that most of these gasoline-powered boats cost half of the 290,000 euros of the C-8.

According to data published by Candela, its new jewel is the second or third best-selling powerboat in the 28-ft category in Scandinavia. Not only electric boats, but any type of power source. By the end of the year, they expect to have a real impact on sales of combustion-powered boats in this size category.

Interior and Exterior Luxury

The boat includes many important features, such as a below-deck cabin with a four-person settee, a bathroom with toilet and a freshwater shower.

It also has an optional hardtop for cold environments or for sun protection, premium sound system and a 15.4-inch high-resolution touchscreen for navigation and S control.

It is 95% cheaper to operate than gas-powered boats and more efficient than any other electric prototype, which also reduces electricity costs.

The hydrofoils, which are responsible for the higher efficiency, provide a much smoother ride. Unlike flat-bottomed or V-hulled ships, the Candela hydrofoils fly over the water and leave no trail.
