Formula E’s expansion plans do not stop despite the fact that major manufacturers have decided to leave the series, and the COVID-19 onslaught prevented the tournament from reaching destinations planned by the promoters.

The electric single-seater category organizers unveiled this week the street circuit that will host the E-Prix in Cape Verde, South Africa, which will debut in season nine, scheduled to host third-generation (Gen3) technology.

Cabo Verde will be the second African city to host the electrified party, following Morocco’s Marrakech, which put on a great show for lovers of zero-emission motorsport.

Venue Details

The track is expected to be one of the fastest in the series and will join the likes of Monaco, Mexico City, Berlin, London and New York as Formula E’s flagship track.

It has a total of 12 turns and 2.8 kilometers. The layout begins with a small straight connecting the Green Point Stadium and the cricket club, in one of the most iconic areas of the entire metropolis. It is divided between the Green Point and Waterfront districts and will feature the iconic “Table Mountain” as a backdrop.

Although there is still no date set for the event, the first phase of construction of the circuit will begin next April and is expected to be almost ready by December of this year.  Likewise, the final works of adequacy of the urban section where the layout has been drawn will be done in the weeks prior to the celebration itself.

Good Sensations

Alberto Longo, Formula E Director and Co-Founder, highlighted the support received by the announcement of the realization of the E-Prix in African territory. “We have had a very positive response within the ecosystem formed by drivers, teams and sponsors about coming to Cape Town to compete. We are delighted to have this event on our ninth season calendar.”

According to Iain Banner, Promoter-in-Chief for the day, the public is “crying out” for a race on an urban track, so they are responding to the demands.

“We believe Formula E in Cape Town will showcase South Africa as a major act in the transition to a greener future and position the region as a pioneering hub for renewable energy,” he said.

Apart from the big party that will signify the race, and as part of Formula E’s sustainable legacy, Cape Town will also host an E-Fest, a festival to promote a greener economy while showcasing future electric mobility solutions.
