Mikel Azcona is a very young racing driver but with incredible talent that has led him to stand out in multiple categories of world motorsport, the most recent being the Pure ETCR in which he made history last weekend after driving for the Motorsport X CUPRA team.

Azcona was born on June 25, 1996 in Arrigorriaga, Spain, showing passion for speed from a very young age when his father bought him a kart when he was 6 years old, standing out in 2009 after finishing second in the Cadet Class of the National Championship and Series XXI, in addition to finishing fourth in KF3.

However, in 2012 he decided to take the big leap into the touring car category where he has specialized to this day, instead of opting for single-seaters as most professional dream to do. There, he started from the bottom to gain experience and prestige, which was not long in coming after being crowned in the CLIO CUP 3 Motor Racing Open Cup and finishing third in the third Spanish Endurance Challenge Ferodo Sport Championship.

The following year the triumphs kept coming. Mikel Azcona was proclaimed champion of the Clio de Motorland-Alcañiz Cup and the CLIO CUP 3 Motoring Open Cup, while he was third in the Spain Clio Cup Junior Championship. In 2014 he returned to repeat the title in Motorland and stood out in new categories such as the EuroCup Clio and the CER category Seat León Copa (both second).

In 2015, Azcona’s streak did not stop, he was fired up and determined to go for more, since he completed a winning podium in various categories. He won the Spanish Clio Cup IV Junior Championship, was second in the Spanish Clio Cup IV Scratch Championship and third in the Seat Leon Euro Cup. In 2016 he continued his good streak and won the titles of the Clio Cup Spain Circuito Los Arco, both in Navarra as in Valencia.

Mikel Azcona’s talent was evident everywhere, so much so that he reached the Challenge SMC Clio Cup at the Jarama Circuit in 2017 and won, but not only that, but he also set the lap record on the Spanish track. Also, he finished second in the Audi TT Cup International Championship. Selection of promising young drivers, that year being the longest in terms of participation in various events. As if that weren’t enough, the following year he won the TCR EUROPE Championship aboard Cupra Racing and PCR Sport.

Pure ETCR

Behind the wheel of Motorsport X CUPRA, Mikel Azcona arrived at the Pure ETCR, the world’s first 100% electric and sustainable passenger car category. There, he managed to quickly adapt to the driving style and internal rules of the championship to make history and become the first winner of the category after triumphing in the first race held at the Autodromo Vallelunga, Rome.
