With just two seasons under his belt in Formula E, the Dutch driver, Nyck de Vries has accumulated great achievements in his career to be considered one of the faces of the series for years to come.

Born in Sneek, Netherlands on February 6, 1995, de Vries won the competition’s Rookie of the Year in the 2019/20 season and in just his second season he won the Diriyah ePrix. All the achievements of the pilot have been with the Mercedes team.

Despite being 26 years old, de Vries started his career in 2008 when he won the World Series of Karting (WSK) in the KF3 (kart racing class for the best 11-15 year old drivers). The following year, he would retain that championship and win the KF3 European Championship.

In 2010 and 2011, the Dutchman won the Karting World Championship which represented an overwhelming start in the first moments of his career.

Formula Renault 2.0

After obtaining the Karting world championship, de Vries started in the single-seater series in Formula Renault 2.0, however it was not until 2014 when he would get the championship in Formula Renault 2.0 Alps and Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup with the Finnish team Koiranen GP.

In the 14 races of the Renault 2.0 Alps, he was on the podium 12 times and obtained nine victories and nine pole positions.

As early as 2015, he raced in the Formula Renault 3.5 series, in which he finished in third place and won the final race in Jerez, Spain.

Up to GP3

In 2016, de Vries decided to take a step forward by participating in GP3 with the ART Grand Prix. The drivers in that series were talented and the young man finished the year in sixth place with two wins.

Formula 2

Although he did not take the Formula 2 championship, the Dutch driver’s stage in the Formula 1 support series served for his learning and experience. De Vries finished his debut year in seventh place in 2017 and in 2018, he closed the campaign in fourth place and with three victories.

The next year he would return to run with ART Grand Prix of Formula 2 and this time he would become champion with four victories, eight podiums and 52 points of difference over his closest pursuer, Nicholas Latifi.

To electric races

2019/2020 would mark Nyck’s career with him joining the Mercedes-Benz EQ team to participate in Formula E although he also completed rookie tests with Audi, NIO and Envision Virgin Racing.

In his debut at Diriyah, he scored his first points after finishing sixth in the first race. Also in the last contest of the season he would finish second which earned him the rookie of the year and accumulate 60 points in the series.

That second place in the last dispute of the 2019/20 would be an indication of the evolution of the 26-year-old driver since months later he would take the Diriyah award in Saudi Arabia, a place that brings good memories to the Dutchman because he always scores.

Reserve in Formula 1

Nyck de Vries is in the plans of the Mercedes Benz team, however the driver will be one of the reserve competitors of the team of the 3-silver arrows in Formula 1.
